We use AVG for antivirus and let windows manage the firewall. When things get sticky we run Spybot Search and Destroy as well as Ad-aware to clean spyware from our machines.
We highly recommend AVG. For home users the free edition is excellent. Small business customers need to purchase a copy for each computer. AVG uses fewer resources which helps to keep your computer running as fast as possible. Other antivirus programs will work well too - but we recommend AVG when you need to renew.
We let Windows manage your firewall. We have yet to have any issues with this.
